Once home to one of North America’s main steel mills, Sydney was founded in 1785 by the British. During both the first and second World Wars it was a major staging area for England bound convoys. Post war saw a major decline in employment at the steel mill and the government had to nationalize it in 1967, forming the Sydney Steel Corporation. The population has continued to decline since the 1970’s and the steel plant eventually closed in 2001. Today the city’s main industries are call centers and tourism.
